After Rita and again after Laura, homeowners replacing a roof for the second time in fifteen years asked what would not need replacing a third time. Panels joined at raised seams with concealed clips; no fastener penetrates the panel face. The seam is what makes it the better roof in wind-driven rain, and the clips let the panel move with heat. It is the more expensive of the two by a clear margin.
Corrugated or ribbed panels screwed through the face with gasketed screws. Cheaper, faster, and common on Mid-County houses, barns and additions. The gaskets are the weak point: they age in the sun and the screws back out with thermal movement, and the roof needs a fastener check every several years.
Either one is inspected under the same windstorm rule as a shingle roof in Jefferson County. Metal panel attachment and edge detail have their own requirements in the TDI-adopted specifications, and a contractor who has only ever had shingle roofs inspected should say so.
On a typical Beaumont single-story house, a standing seam roof runs roughly two to three times the price of an architectural shingle roof built to the same specification, and an exposed-fastener panel roof sits somewhere between the two, depending on the panel gauge and the amount of trim. Those are ranges, not quotes; the contractor's written scope is the number. Against that, a properly installed metal roof is expected to outlast two shingle roofs, and in a county where the shingle roof has twice been replaced by a hurricane rather than by age, that arithmetic is the whole argument.
The honest counter-argument, for a household at Beaumont's median income: the money is spent up front, and a metal roof on a house you plan to leave in five years is a gift to the next owner. Shingle built to the specification and inspected is a sound roof. Metal is a longer one.

A light-colored metal roof reflects more summer heat than dark composition, which matters over a 120°F attic. Rain on a metal roof over a vented attic with insulation is not the drumming people expect; over an uninsulated porch it is.
