Nederland, pronounced NEE-der-land and named by the Dutch settlers of 1897, is 18,856 people at the 2020 census and the middle of Mid-County. It holds a national record nobody wanted: 60.58 inches of rain in Hurricane Harvey, confirmed by the National Weather Service as the most from a tropical cyclone in the continental United States. It is also in Jefferson County, so every re-roof here is built to the windstorm specification and inspected.
Nederland was a residential town for refinery and terminal workers from early on, and incorporated in 1940. The stock that came with that is single-story frame houses of the 1940s through 1970s on piers, brick ranches after that, composition shingle on all of it. Harvey's 60.58 inches did not come through roofs; it came up from the ground and sat in attics as humidity for days. The roof lesson from Nederland is the false alarm: ceiling stains that appear weeks after the water has gone, from condensation on the underside of decking, are not roof leaks.
